About the Registration
The Tamil Nadu Recreation Clubs Act, 1975 governs the registration and regulation of recreation clubs functioning within the State of Tamil Nadu. This Act was enacted to ensure that recreation clubs operate lawfully, transparently, and strictly for recreational purposes, without indulging in gambling, illegal gaming, or unlawful activities.
A Recreation Club under this Act is an association of persons formed for lawful recreational activities such as indoor games, reading, cultural interaction, social gatherings, and other permitted leisure activities. Registration under the Act is mandatory for clubs that allow members to assemble and engage in such activities within a designated premises.
To obtain registration, the club must submit an application to the concerned jurisdictional authority (usually the District Police / Licensing Authority) along with required documents. These generally include the club’s name, address, list of office bearers and members, rules and regulations (bye-laws), details of the premises, and an undertaking that no gambling, wagering, or unlawful games will be conducted in the club. The authorities may inspect the premises before granting approval.
Once registered, the recreation club is legally permitted to function subject to strict compliance with the conditions imposed under the Act. The club must ensure that only permitted recreational activities are conducted, maintain proper records, restrict entry to members as per rules, and cooperate with inspections by authorities. Any violation, such as allowing gambling or unlawful activities, can lead to cancellation of registration, penalties, or prosecution.
